Motorola Talkabout API

Has anyone successfully used the Motorola Talkabout radio as a modem to communicate between devices to show other group members on the map (ride sharing app)?  (Uses the radio and not Wi-Fi to communicate)  

They have a native phone app map that uses the radio this way...and supports displaying them on their phone map.  Problem is that map software is no where even close to a Magellan GPS in capabilities.
